Jan. 6 committee subpoenas social networks soon after ‘inadequate’ responses

Fb, Twitter and Google are reckoning with their position in the spread of misinformation.

The Residence committee investigating the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol Hill riot said Thursday that it subpoenaed Reddit, Twitter and the father or mother providers of Fb and Google soon after getting “insufficient responses” from the tech giants. 

In August, the Pick Committee requested 15 platforms for data “linked to the unfold of misinformation, initiatives to overturn the 2020 election or protect against the certification of the outcomes, domestic violent extremism, and international impact in the 2020 election.” The committee is also on the lookout at what actions social networks took to prevent their platforms from being “breeding grounds” for radicalization. 

“It is really disappointing that after months of engagement, we still do not have the files and facts needed to reply individuals fundamental queries,” committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, a Mississippi Democrat, said in a statement. 

In a letter to Facebook’s dad or mum organization, Meta, Thompson cited information experiences about how folks utilized Meta’s platforms to unfold misinformation, conspiracy theories, despise speech and violence ahead of Jan. 6, along with documents provided by previous Fb merchandise supervisor turned whistleblower Frances Haugen.

Fb has downplayed its position in the Jan. 6 assault and CEO Mark Zuckerberg advised US lawmakers in March he thinks “the accountability listed here lies with the men and women who took the steps to split the legislation and do the insurrection.”

A Reddit spokesperson reported the organization “been given the subpoena and will go on to operate with the committee on their requests.” Meta and Google’s father or mother business, Alphabet, did not straight away answer to requests for comment. Twitter declined to comment.
